The Buddha, the unparalleled compassionate guide, the supreme king of the Śākyas, taught eighty-four thousand groups of Dharma conforming to the constitution, capacity and devotion of those to be tamed. As quoted in Lochen Dharmaśrī’s Ornament of the Intention of Guhyapati:
The twenty-one thousand Dharmas of the Vinaya pitika were taught as antidotes for taming the affliction of desire.
The twenty-one thousand Dharmas of the Sūtra pitika were taught as antidotes for taming the affliction of hatred.
The twenty-one thousand Dharmas of the Abhidharma pitika were taughtas antidotes for taming the affliction of ignorance.
The twenty-one thousand Dharmas of the fourth pitika were taught as antidotes for taming the three poisons.
All the eighty-four thousand groups of Dharma are the sole methods for taming the eighty-four thousand afflictions rooted in self-grasping, such as desire, hatred, ignorance and so on. Those who wish to improve themselves have no other way to practice than hearing explanations of the scriptures of the Tripitika and practicing through meditating on the three trainings of the path [discipline, samadhi and wisdom].
Master Vasubandhu stated [in the Abhidharmakośa]:
There sublime Dharma of the Buddha is of two kinds:
scripture and realization.
The only ones who maintain them are
those who study and practice.
As such, the four precious pitikas of the uttered discourses are confirmed through hearing and reflection. What they describe must be practiced through accomplishing the higher trainings of discipline, samadhi and wisdom. However, in these degenerate times people are distracted in this life with many goals, many activities and many worldly affairs. All of teachings of the Victor, the Perfect Buddha, vast and deep in meaning, are difficult to understand properly. Therefore, the All-Knowing Dharma King, Gyalwa Longchenpa, gathered all of the intimate instructions of the sūtras, tantras and great treatises into one. If someone makes this great text called Relaxing in the Nature of the Mind of the Great Perfection their main practice, the essential quick path for a person to attain Buddhahood which is explained as a single straight path, it contains everything needed for practicing all the teachings of the Victor.
Therefore, I ask those of you who are interested in the Buddhadharma in general, and specifically those whose lotus of intelligent faith in the natural Great Perfection has blossomed, to understand that you should rely on these light rays of the sun, Relaxing in the Nature of the Mind of the Great Perfection, the excellent text of the great gradual path of intimate instructions.
